Sexuality can be seen as one of the most intimate pieces of the human experience, with it being inextricably linked to our personal relationships and how we live our lives. Our sexuality can define our attraction to other people whether this be emotional, physical, or romantic attraction.
All sexual identities and orientations are valid and make us who we are.
For some people then their sexuality is a lack of or little interest in these types of attraction. For example, Asexual individuals can be less interested in physical or sexual relationships but still wish to have intimate romantic ones. Gay and Lesbian individuals then are interested in relationships with the same sex but again there are more nuanced types of sexuality than what we have mentioned here. Regardless, all of these sexual identities and orientations are valid and make us who we are.
In reaching out you are taking the first steps in dealing with these difficulties and also possibly unlocking fulfilling aspects of your life.
Sexuality in a heteronormative world can be challenging as we are expected to express ourselves or pursue relationships in a specific way to fit in and be accepted. Coming to terms with your sexuality can be one of the biggest barriers in life due to this external pressure. The feeling that you are wrong or abnormal causing us to question ourselves and even deny these parts of who we are. Additionally, issues with our sexuality can be separate from our identity needing help to navigate and deal with; sexual trauma, addiction, arousal and performance anxieties for example.
Through therapy we hope to instil a sense of hope and that you are not alone. To affirm your sexual identity/orientation, manage difficulties with sex and allow you to be confident to be your true self. If there are specific obstacles to help overcome them and ensure that you are provided the techniques and tools needed to manage them.
