Dave is a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist who provides support to members of the LGBTQIA+ community and his local area. Additionally, offering therapy online catering to a wide age range, from people in their twenties to their sixties. Dave’s therapeutic approach is a combination of humanistic, person centred and CBT techniques. Utilising these techniques to tackle issues such as, anxiety, depression, interpersonal and relationship conflicts and working with neurodiverse clients.

His education is in Psychology and CBT, starting with a BA in English and Psychology from NUIG (University of Galway). He then completed a Master’s in Psychology in the University of Limerick, before gaining a Master’s In Cognitive Behavioural Therapy with ICHAS (Irish College of Humanities and Applied Sciences). Now after attaining his therapy accreditation Dave hopes to continue to hone his therapy skills by pursuing further professional development. Wishing to expand his knowledge of neurodivergent and queer issues. He would also like to improve and explore training on trauma and relationships.

Being a married gay man, queer therapy is of the utmost importance to Dave as our community have a variety of unique issues that we face in our modern world. Being able to offer a comprehensive therapy where queer individuals are understood and given true empathy is one of his key aims. Supporting each other and feeling that there is no need to justify your lived experience is an essential part of queer therapy and something that he hopes is exuded in his therapy work. This is not exclusively for Gay or Queer men, Dave endeavours to ensure that individuals of all sexual identities and genders are supported.

Using CBT, person-centred and humanistic approaches is at the heart of Dave’s therapy. CBT as a strong backbone that allows issues to be tackled directly. Such as, anxiety and depression, phobias and relationship issues. The person-centred side allows for individual nuance and to tailor interventions to the client. How do you naturally best approach situations, what has helped you in the past and finding the mantras or affirmations that resonate with you. Finally, using humanistic approaches we hope to emphasise the importance of being true to oneself, and in so doing embracing it fully. As such, fostering a more aligned and fulfilling life. By incorporating these modalities we hope to provide consistent support and enable the exploration of life’s inevitable ups and downs. Allowing space for personal growth and making strides towards self-actualisation.

Dave is also one of the Peer Supports at Inner Voice Inner Journey, helping to provide encouragement for trainee therapists who are gathering their qualification or accreditation hours. Giving advice on how to work with these early clients and to foster their own unique approaches to therapy. Using his own experience he hopes to provide concrete examples to help tackle common issues that therapists face when learning their craft. However, Peer support is also a place to learn from the wider group and Dave

takes this opportunity to learn from others and continuously develop. Everyone’s insights and ways of working can be invaluable enabling the team to stay robust and improve.

While working with Inner Voice Inner Journey Dave has also had the opportunity to present some Pride workshops on Neurodiverse Affirming Therapy for the LGBTQIA+ community. This was a great experience for him and something he would love to continue in the future as this is a significant area of interest for him and also Inner Voice Inner Journey as a whole.
